Montmorency House is a modern skillion roof design which maximises passive solar gains via northern celestial windows high up in the vaulted ceilings. Designed for the slope, this home features 3 floor levels accessed by a split central stairwell. Both the garage and the entry step up with the land so they have direct access to the sloping roadway. Internal access is provided from the garage on the lowest level (refer to floor plan 2) along with the games and guest rooms (a great space zoned away from the rest of the home for a teenager or elderly parent/s). On the entry level (refer to floor plan 1) we have an open kitchen / living / meals area with a study / rumpus close by. A central bathroom is positioned close to the 2 kids bedrooms and for guests and the master bedroom has pride of place with northern views, an ensuite and walk in robe.

It’s can be difficult¬†to create a sense of scale¬†when approaching a modern skillion roof design from the high side of a slope as a large part of the home is often hidden out of view as the home steps down with the fall. By including the 3rd level and carefully controlling walls heights, roof pitches and materials, I think we’ve managed to create a design which looks great from all vantage points including high up, but it did take a lot of tweaking to get the balance right…
